The Congregational Church in Killingworth offers Sunday School
classes during the 10:00 AM worship service, for Preschoolers (ages
3 and 4) through 8th grade. Children go into church and
attend the beginning of worship with their families. At 10:15 or so,
the teachers and children will all leave together for Sunday School.
While the church service ends at 11:00, Sunday School classes are
over at 11:15. This gives a full hour for the lessons, as well as
some time for parents to enjoy fellowship at coffee hour in the parish
hall.
Classes for Pre-K and Kindergarten are held in the
Sunday School classrooms downstairs in our main building. This class
is taught by a team of two teachers and a teen assistant, and follows
the Whole People of God curriculum, which integrates
music, art, drama and even puppetry into the lessons. Whole
People of God is a lectionary based curriculum, so the
Bible lessons taught during Sunday School each week are derived
from the scripture readings heard by the congregation during the
worship service.
Middle School aged youth (in Grades 7 and 8) have their own classroom
space in our historic Old Town Hall building, where they are taught
by the same teaching team for the entire year. This class also
uses the Whole People of God lectionary based curriculum. For
this age group, the discussions in class will place emphasis on helping
these preteens make good real-life choices, motivating them to stay
in church, and preparing them for Confirmation and the exciting years
ahead.
Children in Grades 1 through 6 attend our Workshop
Rotation Model Sunday School. This method of teaching
makes use of the concept of multiple intelligences, and addresses
the fact that children all learn differently; some visually,
some through music, some through whole body movement, etc. The
Workshop Rotation Model (known as "WoRM") utilizes
specialized workshop rooms dedicated to different media, and
engages all the senses. The same basic Bible story lesson is
taught for four or five weeks. Instead of sitting in the same
classroom with the same teachers every week, the children stay
with a class of same-age students, led by an adult "shepherd," and
the classes rotate each week to a different workshop room. At
the end of a rotation, each child has experienced the story in
several different ways. Churches that have switched from traditional
teaching to the Workshop Rotation Model of Sunday School report
that the children learn more about the Bible and retain the lessons
better, attendance dramatically increases, parents are happier,
and the kids have a great time and look forward to Sunday School!
Currently, our WoRM Sunday School workshops at the Congregational
Church in Killingworth include the following:

- Bedouin
Encampment - a storytelling and music workshop designed like a desert camp. The teacher, often dressed in a biblical or cultural costume, sits in the opening to a Bedouin-style tent, while the children sit on cushions around a "campfire" and listen to a story or learn a song.
- Martha and Mary's Kitchen - In this workshop, held in the church kitchen, children utilize their senses of smell, taste and touch while baking or preparing a meal related to the Bible story being studied.
- Thou Art - an arts and crafts workshop, designed with all the colors of God's rainbow.
- God's Games - Here, students will play a
variety of games, based on popular games such as checkers, Jeopardy,
etc., but with Biblical themes.
- God.com - Children in the computer lab use software specially designed for Christian Education programs.
- Biblical Drama - On our stage in the historic Old Town Hall building, using props and Biblical costumes, students will reenact scenes from the Bible.
- Pray Per View - Bible stories are reinforced by watching a video, or clips from a movie, while munching popcorn in a theater room environment. A structured discussion always follows the video.
Throughout the year, a variety of special events and activities
are held for the children and their families. These include a Christmas
Pageant, Advent wreath making workshop, Thanksgiving pumpkin bread
baking, Palm Sunday activities, a Seder Supper on Maundy Thursday,
Youth Worship services, family picnics, and more.
All are welcome to attend Sunday School at the Congregational
Church in Killingworth. Feel free to stop in any Sunday morning
to visit our classrooms and meet our teachers and staff. For more
information, or to request a registration form or a Parent Handbook,

All youth in Grade 9 or above are eligible to attend Confirmation Class. This year-long program, which is facilitated by our Pastor with the assistance of the Christian Education Committee and the Diaconate, will explore the faith development of the confirmands and prepare them for full membership in the church. We use a mentor-based confirmation curriculum, Making Disciples, which pairs each youth in the program with an adult mentor from the congregation. The class will also meet as a group several times throughout the year to explore various topics and service projects, and to share some fun and fellowship with each other and their mentors. A new class forms each September. The class is confirmed and welcomed as new members of the Congregational Church in Killingworth on the first Sunday in June.

Christian Education Missions:
All children registered in Sunday School at the Congregational Church
in Killingworth receive their own offering envelopes, and are invited
to contribute to the Children's Offering, which is collected each
week in the classrooms. (Each child's contribution is optional and
entirely confidential.) This offering is not added to the church
general fund; instead, it goes into a special fund, which is used
to support a number of projects chosen by the Christian Education
Committee and, in some cases, the children themselves. Current CE Missions
projects include:
Simon Malo, our sponsored "World Vision" child,
who lives with
his family in Kenya. Simon is 16 years old; we have been
sponsoring him since he was just a small boy, and will continue
to do so until he reaches adulthood.
Heifer
Project: for the past two years, we have conducted
a variety of fund raising activities to earn money to buy animals
for the 'Heifer Project.' Our goal is to fill a whole symbolic
"ark" with animals; we are about halfway there, and hope to
complete the project by filling the "ark" within a year
or two. www.heifer.org

Pastor's Scholarship:
The Pastor's Scholarship Fund was established by the members of the Congregational Church in Killingworth in order to help advance the post-secondary school education of the youth of our Church. Funds for the scholarships come from memorial donations and contributions from church members, as well as from fundraising events, such as the annual Fall Harvest Dinner, held each November at the church. The scholarship is available to high school seniors who have been accepted to and plan to attend an educational program beyond high school. Application to the Pastor's Scholarship may be delayed one year; it is also open to college freshman, if they did not apply during their senior year of high school. Applicants must have attained membership in the Congregational Church in Killingworth by September 15th of the school year of application.
Application forms for the Pastor's Scholarship are available in
the church office. In addition to the competed application form,
applicants must submit a written essay of no more than 300 words,
explaining how the church has influenced his or her life. The deadline
for applications is April 15; the scholarships will be awarded in
June.

Youth Fellowship:
Youth Groups are here! Our church has joined with the Higganum Congregational Church and the First Congregational Church of Haddam to form both a Middle School Youth Group and a Senior High Youth Group. The two groups began to meet in the fall of 2006, and combine fellowship and fun through social activities and outings, with opportunities for outreach, community service and spiritual growth. Both groups are led by the pastors and Christian Education staff of the Haddam churches, who are ably assisted by several dedicated adult volunteers from all three churches. These two youth groups meet regularly at the Congregational Church in Killingworth and the Lewis House at the First Congregational Church of Haddam, 905 Saybrook Road in Haddam, and both are open to youth from all three churches and their friends. All are welcome here! Check our calendar page for upcoming Youth Group meetings and events. For information or to join either Youth Group, please call the church office at (860)663-1789.
